How to stay safe during a storm or Hurricane

As we are still in hurricane season, it is important to take great precautions and be prepared for any type of storm.

  1. Stay informed: monitor your local weather news to stay up to date.
  2. Prepare your home: move outside furniture inside the home store valuables in plastic containers, secure all windows.
  3. Stock up on supplies: Make sure you have enough nonperishable food & water for at least a week.
  4. Prepare an emergency kit: make sure you create an emergency kit containing medical materials, flashlights, batteries, and a radio.
  5. Fill up your car: keep your gas tank full.
  6. Know the flood risk areas: Check if your home is located within FEMA’s flood zone.

Be aware of flash floods during a storm, and the infections they could bring! If your home was flooded there is a chance that it’s contaminated with sewage. This can lead to infections, so follow these tips:

  1. Throw away any items that came in direct contact with the flood water.
  2. Always keep your hands clean if you made contact with flood water.
  3. Don’t let children play in flood water.
